How One Dealership Relies on Analytics to Improve
Dealership Processes

With its administrative offices located in Champaign, Illinois, Birkey’s Farm Store, Inc., will celebrate its 60th anniversary in 2014. Birkey’s features 12 dealerships throughout Illinois and one Indiana-based location.

In order to better manage its multiple locations, Birkey’s has been relying on IntelliDealer since 2008. “At the time, what drew us to CDK was the accessibility of information and our ability to share information with our employees,” says CEO Mike Hedge, who was CFO at the time Birkey’s selected CDK Global.

Until 2008, Birkey’s had been working with a green screen based dealer management system (DMS). “We were outgrowing the technology,” says Hedge. “We had people in management roles who needed to rely on someone else to retrieve the data they needed to manage the business.”

After updating to the latest version of IntelliDealer, Birkey’s noticed immediate improvements. “We found that the information was absolutely more available, right away,” Hedge continues. “With the click of a mouse, store managers can drill down from the dashboard into sales and operating data, even to individual tickets. We can do all of that without other people getting involved and having to request information.”

Analytics Vital to Good Decision Making

For Birkey’s, having that store data readily available in the way of true analytics has been a significant improvement for business decision making. Says Hedge, “We believe that putting the right information in people’s hands is vital to making good business decisions. We practice open book management, and have been training our folks to make the right decisions. To do that, though, we needed good information. IntelliDealer gives us that good information.”

Hedge also notes that Birkey’s is “making extensive use of database queries to push out reports automatically, rather than pulling the reports we need ourselves.”

Birkey’s is also taking advantage CDK’s parts accrual capability. “This capability lets us better manage parts receipts and transfers to keep our parts inventory in balance with the general ledger and gives us accurate reporting of our parts margins. This is an area that has traditionally challenged equipment dealers,” Hedge concludes.
